Why Creativity in Counseling?

Whether you’re a seasoned counselor looking for new techniques or just starting to explore creative interventions, we all need a refresh from time to time. 

While we understand that traditional counseling techniques are valuable, sometimes we need to tap into different parts of ourselves to achieve healing and growth. Creative approaches to counseling through art, music, sandplay, and psychodrama can:

NJ Multicultural Counseling

The Garden state is full of color, vibrancy, and kinetic energy that is beautifully woven together by the diversity of New Jersey residents. Understanding a client’s cultural background is crucial for effective counseling. It allows us to develop deeper understanding of our clients, develop rapport, accurate conceptualizations which ultimate enable us to be competent counselors. In this division we equip counselors with the skills and knowledge to:

Standing Committees

The Standing Committees of the Association shall be

a. Executive Committee

The Executive Committee shall be chaired by the President of the Association. The Committee members shall include the President-Elect, President-Elect, Elect, Immediate Past President, Treasurer and Secretary. The Executive Director shall be a non-voting member of the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee shall have the power of the Executive Council between Executive Council meetings, except that it cannot modify any actions taken by the Executive Council. Minutes of every meeting of the Executive Committee must be recorded and presented to the Executive Council at its next meeting. All actions taken by the Executive Committee must be ratified or approved by the Executive Council at a duly constituted meeting

b. Public Policy and Legislative Committee

The Public Policy and Legislative Committee shall have a chairperson appointed by the President. The chairperson shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The Committee shall monitor, initiate and coordinate public policy activities at the local, state and national levels and recommend actions to the Executive Council, which would support NJCA’s agenda.

c. Membership Committee

The Membership Committee shall have a chairperson appointed by the President for a term of two years. The chairperson shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The Committee shall coordinate membership recruitment and the collection of dues and annual membership renewal.

d. Annual Conference Committee

The Annual Conference Committee shall be chaired by the President-Elect of the Association. The chairperson shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The Committee shall plan and coordinate the Annual Conference.

e. Budget and Finance Committee

The Budget and Finance Committee shall be chaired by the Treasurer. The members shall be the President, Immediate Past President, President-Elect and Secretary and the 4 Members-at Large. The Committee shall develop and monitor the annual budget and expenditures.

f. Strategic Planning Committee

Strategic Planning Committee shall be chaired by the President. The President shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The Committee shall develop and monitor a long term strategic plan for the Association.  

g. Leadership Development Committee

Leadership Development Committee shall be chaired by the Immediate Past President. The chairperson shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The Committee shall identify emerging leaders and develop the annual leadership development program. 

h. Nominations and Election Committee

Nominations and Election Committee shall be chaired by the Immediate Past President who shall appoint the Committee members. The Committee shall present to the Executive Council and the membership two, but no more than three, nominees for each elected office and be responsible for verifying each candidate’s qualifications and willingness to serve. 

i. Awards Committee

Awards Committee shall have a chairperson appointed by the President. The chairperson shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The Committee shall solicit nominations for annual awards, select recipients according to procedures adopted by the Executive Council and provide for presentation of awards at the Annual Conference. 

j. Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee shall have a chairperson appointed by the President. The chairperson shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The Ethics Committee shall educate the membership regarding the Ethical Standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and refer complaints to the ACA Ethics Committee. 

k. CEU Committee

The CEU Committee shall have a chairperson appointed by the President. The chairperson shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The committee shall monitor the CEU process, facilitate use of the NJCA provider number and maintain CEU records. 

l. Communications / Social Media Committee

The Communications / Social Media Committee shall have a chairperson appointed by the President. The chairperson shall have the discretion to appoint committee members in good standing that the chairperson deems appropriate. The committee shall maximize the ability of NJCA to communicate effectively internally and externally.
