Using Apps and Websites in your Practice

By: Ruth Altamura-Roll, MC, LPC, NCC
Treasurer NJMHCA

As members of NJCA and board members of NJMHCA, we continue to work towards providing information to enhance you, the counselor, as well as provide tools and connections for your practice. At our last meeting, we decided to share writing articles.

In this day and age of technology, websites, apps, videos, face book, linked-in and twitter, just to name a few, we can share tool to engage our clients. I find that I refer to my iPad often to share aps, pictures, web sites, and books. Some of these were shared at conferences, others are from a simple act of googling or going to my app store.

Google is a wonderful tool. It provides many articles, statistics, and informative tools to share with your clients. One thing I learned is never ask Google a question, such as “How do you treat depression?” Google likes statements such as “Treating Depression.” It is a great way to find out the latest information on therapies and treatments, research books and articles or look for handouts for your clients. Google “positive affirmations” and review numerous articles and tools.

The App Store is a great resource. It works much in the same way as Google. In the search box, type what you are looking for, such as hypnosis, collage maker or anger management. Lists of apps appear. Review them before you share them with your clients. Some are free, other have a minimum cost. I’ve suggested many Aps for meditation, emotion, mindfulness and journaling. Here are some of my favorites:

APPS:

BreezeLITE (wind chimes)
Chakra Chime (Meditation chimes)
End Anxiety (Self-hypnosis)
Breathe2Relax

Color Mandala
Stained Glass
Daily Yoga
Lose it (Food Tracker)

Insight Timer
My Spiritual Tool Kit
Romantic Ideas
Emotions

The following is a list of some website which provide free materials on substance abuse, mental health, websites, apps, fact sheets and tests

Websites:

  1. Samhsa.gov
  2. DCOE.mil
  3. Psychologytoday.com/tests

Technology as a tool for therapy can be a wonderful thing for our clients. Experiment, explore and indulge in the technology
